Ever since I saw Little House On The Prairie as a kid, I’ve been fascinated by how the pioneers lived. How could anyone be happy without indoor plumbing, central heating, microwaves, refrigerators, and televisions with dozens of channels? Well, not only were many of them happy, they were arguably happier than most people today, but I’m getting sidetracked.
Even if you’re not as interested in the pioneers as I am, it’s worth taking the time to learn how they lived. Why? Because if doomsday ever arrives, the survivors (hopefully you’re one of them) will get to discover first hand what pioneer life was like.
This is especially true when it comes to food. There are a few dozen foods that they ate on a regular basis, not necessarily because they liked them, but because they the ingredients were relatively easy to grow or acquire. These are the kind of foods people will turn to again after doomsday.
Jacob Hunter of Primal Survivor wrote a whole article about this. Here’s his list:
- Cured Meat
- Small Game
- Dried Fruit
- Pocket Yams
- Cabbage Salad
- Mormon Gravy
- Bread Pudding
- Thrift Fritters
- No Dairy Cake
- Tender Meat
- Corn Soup
- Bacon & Sourdough Pancakes
